How do I tackle cyber defense?

be preventative minded

Don’t wait until something unsavory happens to your business. Be preventative minded and get ahead of it! If you’re reading this then you understand there are concerns in this area and risks that need to be mitigated. If something bad has already happened, let’s make sure it doesn’t happen again! Next is to be open to changes.

be open to changes

In order to mitigate cyber risk and increase your cyber defense you will need to open to making changes to things like your processes, policies, technology, and budget. Don’t be afraid of the budget issue as many of these changes I’m referring to are free and/or low cost to implement. Having said that, yes, you might need to spend a little money in order to put the right things in place. Just like anything else for a business, cybersecurity is an investment. Pay a little up front so you don’t pay big when something bad happens. Next is to fight complacency.

fight complacency

Cybersecurity is not a “set it and forget it” endeavor. Threats change, technology changes, and businesses change over time. Be ready to re-address your security posture on a set cadence to make sure you’re where you need to be. Things like processes and technology need to be tested periodically to ensure they are working. Employees need consistent training, and policies in this area should be living documents. It’s easy to fall into the trap of complacency, so don’t do it!
